Biographical Information

"In recent years my curriculum has evolved from industrial arts to technology education," says Don Bernard, who teaches in the vocational program at Chugiak High School in Eagle River. His 21 years as an educator have given Mr. Bernard ample familiarity with the shift away from areas of expertise traditionally associated with shop and the pressing need and demand for a more technically informed curriculum. As a frontline reformer in the area of technological fluency, Mr. Bernard has implemented the Materials Science Technology Program at Chugiak High School. In addition, he has piloted an applied technology course for the state of Alaska. In the interest of true literacy and cross-curricular integration, Mr. Bernard has also been involved at the state and school levels in programs devoted to the development of writing skills.
